Diphtheria is a serious infection of the nose and throat caused by the Corynebacterium diphtheriae bacterium, although cases in Canada are rare due to immunization. The majority of diphtheria labs received are non-toxigenic, and therefore not reportable. Toxigenic diphtheria cases and carriers are reportable through PARIS and requires review with an MHO.
